Cleveland Area Business Carries Message of Ground Zero Cross Forward
Mentor, OH – June 5, 2002 – A hand-crafted piece of jewelry given as a gift back in December to the man who discovered the I-beam cross at Ground Zero is now being mass produced to spread the good story and to spread good will.
The story of Frank Silecchia’s discovery of the cross standing upright in the rubble just days after the towers collapsed is a story of faith, a story of hope and a story of love. Last October, the story made national headlines. By November, it was yesterday’s news.
If it were up to Silecchia, who now is championing to have the cross become a lasting memorial in lower Manhattan, that story would be a permanent fixture in the news - yesterday, today and tomorrow.
PROMISE TWTR Inc., a Cleveland area start-up that designs products to help people remember, has teamed with Silecchia and a non-profit organization called Tuesday’s Children, to keep the story of the cross alive and to raise money for the orphans of the tragedy – some 6,000 of them, according to Chris Burke, founder of NYC-based Tuesday’s Children. TC is a special event resource and mentoring program founded by the brothers, cousins, colleagues and friends of the World Trade Center victims.
It was last October, when Promise founders Sandy Vettel and Roderick Johnson first read the article about Silecchia and the cross. Promise was in the fledgling stage of creating a business dedicated to helping people remember their loved ones, particularly those who have passed on.
“We couldn’t get the news of Frank and that cross out of our minds,” Vettel said. “We were completely distracted by that story and we had a strong feeling that we should reach out and help. The story was so inspirational, a miracle really.”
In keeping with its mission of helping people create special ways to remember, Promise decided to give a gift of remembrance to both Silecchia and Father Brian Jordan, the Franciscan monk who blessed the steel beam cross at Ground Zero and who worked with Silecchia to save the cross from the wrecking ball.
The gift – a hand-crafted 14K gold pendant cross and chain (meticulously designed as a replica of the steel beam cross) – was delivered in December. It was meant to touch the lives of those two men, but as a gift from the heart usually does, it bounced back and touched their lives as well, Vettel said.
In January, Silecchia invited Vettel and her partners to Ground Zero to tour the site and participate in Mass under the famed cross. “It was on that trip that we realized that yes, the cross was a symbol of faith and hope, but perhaps more importantly, it was a symbol of love!”
The NYC trip set the wheels in motion for Promise to join forces with Silecchia to carry that message forward. Promise agreed to mass produce the cross pendant and to help raise money for the Tuesday’s Children charity.
Several weeks ago, the website was launched and recently, Promise finalized arrangements to donate a generous portion of its proceeds to Tuesday’s Children Fund
“We are hopeful that we can get this cross out to the masses as a unique way to remember the events of 9/11. The cross is a reminder for all of us that where there is darkness there is also a light. The discovery of the cross has provided so many with comfort, we just want to continue that legacy,” Vettel said.
“At the same time, we are painfully aware that there are many, many people out there who are suffering so much. We hope our contributions can positively impact these people’s lives. That would mean the world to us.”
“Working on this project with Frank has been so inspiring.” Vettel said. “He is a man of integrity and compassion, who really feels that this cross was given to him so that he could spread the news of God’s love to the world.”
“Marketing this cross is also in sync with our company’s core purpose of bringing comfort to people through remembrances that touch the heart and speak to the soul.”
